“Very early to Trinity Church, securing our pew. Temple was in the organ loft as oboe 2nd. With Ellie & me were Miss Rosalie [Ruggles], Louis, Dick [Richard Henry Derby], Murray Hoffman, Jr., Lewis Jones & his son Sidney. Church seldom so crowded. Pretty display of flowers, & the Astor candelabra made the chancel glorious…Music mostly from Haydn no. 1. There was also a Mozart motett, beautiful of course, & a dreary anthem by J. P. Morgan, organist. The performance was not smooth. We must get chorus & orchestra nearer each other. For opening voluntary the greatly-daring Carter (Morgan’s substitute) gave us the finale of the 5th symphony on the ‘nave organ.’ Its effect not quite so bad as might expected. Some of the great big chords were impressive.”

“As will be seen from the programme, the selections were of the very best, and the glorious harmonies of Haydn and Mozart received full justice from the orchestra and grand organ, while the sweet and fresh young voices of the choristers filled the arches of the noble old building with strains of such sacred power that the very air seemed to vibrate with solemn melody.”
