“Philharmonic rehearsal this afternoon. Academy packed. With Ellie in our box were three of our most admired young damsels. Miss Nina French, Miss Consuelo Yznaga, & Miss Minnie Stevens. Also Dick [Richard Henry Derby] & Jem Ruggles & Frank Lazarus. They clacked me out of the box, & I sat mostly on a stool at the side scenes. The illustrious Wieniawski played a pretty-ish concerto by Spohr quite as well as it deserved, and the illustrious Rubinstein conducted his own Ocean symphony, without the score. He is a most magnetic conductor. His pantomime, or gesture expressed p, pp, ppp, sf, fff, staccato, etc. more clearly than words could have done it. The orchestra was on its mettle, and never played better. But the symphony is nothing more than a piece of scholarly careful work, never offending good taste, and signifying nothing at all.”
