“A number of resident German artists, including Madame Lichtmay and Clara Perl, gave at Steinway Hall last night a concert at which the selections were entirely from the works of Schubert. The entertainment was a well-meant and graceful tribute to the memory of the admired song-writer, but, unfortunately, only an inadequate publicity had been given to it, and the attendance was but limited. It may be doubted whether a concert made up entirely of the works of a single composer can be quite satisfactory. Only the vast catalogue of Beethoven’s compositions offers variety enough for such an experiment; but Beethoven may be called, like Shakespeare, the ‘myriad-minded,’ and, like the great dramatist, he stands alone.”
“A few people went to Steinway Hall last night to hear Mme. Lichtmay and eight other artists interpret seventeen works of Schubert. Not much interest was evinced on the occasion, except when the pure, cultivated voice of Mme. Clara Perl was heard in some of those lovely songs that the poet of German melody has bequeathed to us. It is a mistake to give a concert in this city consisting wholly of the works of a single composer. The Wagner night some weeks [ago] might have taught the Schubert manager better.”
