“The fourth of the present series of Sunday concerts took place last evening at this house. The band of the Twenty-second regiment, under the leadership of Mr. P. S. Gilmore, played selections [see above]. The steady progress of this band, attributable to the constant practice together and the indefatigable care of the leader, was noticeable last evening. Two very interesting solos occurred in the Mozart selections, ‘Qui sdegno,’ Sarasate’s grand aria in ‘The Magic Flute,’ interpreted by Mr. Lefebre with taste and expression on the saxophone and the serenade of ‘Don Juan’ played admirably by Mr. Arbuckle on the cornet. In the latter aria the pizzicato accompaniment of the violins was very well imitated by the clarinets. Mlle. Elise Heiss sang the first aria of the page in ‘Les Huguenots,’ and Mme. Lichtmay ‘Tacea la note,’ from ‘Il Trovatore.’ An apology was made for the absence of M. Maurel through illness, and two substitutes were offered in the persons of Signor Scolara and Herr Vierling. The former of these artists sang the Baron’s comic song from ‘La Cenerentola,’ which was hardly in keeping with the occasion; and the latter gave an aria from ‘Lucrezia Borgia.’ The principal attraction, however, of the concert was Signor Italo Campanini, whose fine, sonorous tenor voice was in excellent condition and gave point and beauty to the measures of ‘M’appari’ and ‘Solo profugo,’ from ‘Martha.’ He was assisted by Signor Scolara in the second selection.”
