“Philharmonic rehearsal 2:30 p.m. In my box were Rosalie [Ruggles], Mrs. Newman (who was Miss Ellen Rogers), Mrs. De Neufville, Mrs. Harry Parker, Charles Carroll, and Temple. Wieniawski did a brilliant & beautiful Mendelssohn concerto, & a dry, hard, scrapy something by Bach.
Then a directors’ meeting. The projected performance of Beethoven’s 9th symphony with the C. M. A. chorus seems likely to fall through. The two hundred members of that chorus want two reserved seats each. We have not a quarter of that number to give them. Were this difficulty got over, two of the directors (at least) are unwilling to give the 9th symphony at all. It will involve expenses, and they think, moreover, that the C. M. A. chorus cannot do it. Possibly they are right.”
