“The Sunday concert at the Grand Opera-house, last evening, was attended by as large an audience as could find room in the spacious auditoriums of the place. The fine performances of Mr. Gilmore’s band do not exact notice, for most of the selections were familiar; and the vocal efforts of Mme. Lichtmay and her associates were not creditable enough to deserve mention. Nor need we dwell upon M. Wieniawski’s labors beyond making a record that his work was as finished as his previous night’s achievements at the Academy led us to expect it would be, and that he had to play about thrice as much as was set down for him. The demonstration which followed the recital of ‘Le Carnaval’ was of a kind rarely witnessed; it was, we are sorry to say, a popular leave-taking of the distinguished violinist, who is not likely to be heard in public again unless the representatives of the best of our dilettanti carry out a project of a testimonial-concert previous to his departure for Havana.”
“The concert at the Grand Opera House last evening was another success, and the third of the series will be given next Sunday evening. The programme was an unusually liberal one, embracing both vocal and instrumental music, and introducing such artists as Wieniawski, Graf, Arbuckle and Lichtmay, besides the Twenty-second regiment band; but the audience persisted in encoring nearly every piece, thus lengthening the performance beyond any reasonable limit, making an interval between the two parts impossible, and causing many to leave before the last pieces had been given. Will American audiences never learn moderation in this respect?”
“The concert at the Grand Opera House last night had many attractive elements. The principal one was the farewell appearance of M. Wieniewski, the distinguished violinist, who starts for Havana this week. He played some of his best selections, and had the honor of a recall on every occasion. Gilmore’s band, of the Twenty-second regiment, played selections by Weber, Donizetti, Flotow, Rossini and Handel. Mme. Lichtmay made a success in the ‘Ave Maria’ of Gounod.”
