“Philharmonic rehearsal 2 ½ p.m. Hearing the Mozart symphony two or three successive Fridays gives a charming color to the period, and the Raff symphony is possibly more than tolerable. In my box were Ellie (!) [who had been ill for several weeks], Temple & Louis, little Gouv. Ogden, Rosalie [Ruggles], Jem [Ruggles], Miss Dawson, & Miss Sally Baldwin, whose sister, Miss Grace [Jem’s fiancée], was kept away by a cold. Ellie seems none the worse for this escapade, but it was against everyone’s judgment.”
