“Philharmonic rehearsal at 2 1/2. I had sent the fair Miss Grace [Baldwin] proscenium box D, which the young lady filled up with six or seven of the damsels that be her fellows—and also James [Ruggles, Miss Baldwin’s fiancé]. Discoursed Miss Grace a few minutes before the rehearsal. The more I see her the better I like her. She is prettier than I thought. What is most important, she seems unselfish & thoughtful of others, in little matters—& very grateful moreover for the least kindness or attention. Temple & Louis were with me. We had Mozart’s pure & perfect symphony, & also Raff’s ‘Lenore,’ the 3d movement whereof is a showy march, quite pleasant to hear…

At the directors’ meeting this afternoon, after rehearsal, we voted & reconsidered & see-sawed a good deal (about Lucca & di Murska & Cary, etc.) but we finally decided to make a certain nice good girl very happy—viz., Miss Antonia Henne. We invited her to sing at the next concert. How she will jump for joy when she hears of it. She called on me the other day, & begged me, very modestly & nicely, to do what I could to get her the privilege. Bergmann, Bergner, Rietzel, & Matzka seem to rank her quite high—in a small way, that is.”
