“Philharmonic rehearsal this p.m. Mrs. Noble & Mrs. Talboys in our box—also, for a while, Miss Antonia Henne. Opposite was the fair Miss Grace [Baldwin—Jem Ruggles’s fiancée] with a whole bevy of ladies. The privilege of giving away boxes reconciles me to the bore of the Philharmonic presidency. I think I have thus quite glorified several nice women this winter. They ask their friends, & seem to think a great deal of the little favor.”
