Brief; no mention of music. “…Containing the elements of burlesque, pantomime, ballet, and scenic show, [Children in the wood] addresses [illeg.] order on taste, and, as each element is good, it pleases all…”

The piece is underwhelming; “there seems to be something lacking to appease the public appetite. This may be owing in part to the performance of the Vokes Family, which, although excellent, lack variety. Those who have witnessed them in ‘The Belles of the Kitchen’ have seen them at their best, and no matter under what other guise they may appear, one is constantly reminded of those performances. No doubt our present financial condition has also some effect. A profitable business is being done, but it is not commensurate with the great reputation Messrs. Jarrett & Palmer have won for spectacular productions. The present is announced as positively the last of the spectacle.”
