“The Metropolitan Theatre was re-opened under the management of Violette Picaut, on Thursday evening, July 16, in the presence of an audience which filled the theatre in every part, the lobbies and aisles being choked with persons unable to obtain seats. Rumors had been rife for some days prior to the opening that the cancan was to be produced with a breadth of style not to be witnessed even in its parent home, the Jardin Mabille, Paris, France; but, owing to the presence of some police captains and ex-police commissioners in a private box near the stage, the performers became terror-stricken, and little or no license was taken by the dancers. The auditors were disappointed, and made audible expression of their feelings. On the following evening the dancing was more racy, as there was apparently no restraining influence present. The attendance on the second night, although large for the season of the year, was about half that of the opening night.”
