“…a concert and Summer night’s festival given in aid of The German Hospital at Jones’s Wood Coliseum last evening. About 3,000 persons were present. The societies taking part in the evening’s exercises were the Arion, Beethoven Maennerchor, New-York Maennerchor, New-York Sangerrunde, and the Teutonia Maennerchor. The orchestra numbered about 50 pieces, led by Carl Bergmann and Dr. Leopold Damrosch. The programme rendered including singing by the various societies and music by the orchestra. Selections were given by Weber, Wagner, Rossini, Mendelssohn, Liszt, and others. ‘The Battle Song,’ from Wagner’s ‘Rienzi,’ was given with fine effect by the united choirs of the various societies.”
