“Miss Lina Mayr and Mr. Schütz appeared last night at Mr. Neuendorff’s pretty little theatre as Helen and Paris in Offenbach’s sparkling opera. To some who have seen the opera presented in French in this city the performance last night might appear rather tame, since much of the indecency and many of the impure suggestions of the original were omitted, and in their place were really good singing and graceful acting. Miss Mayr proved herself an accomplished artist in the rôle of the erring wife of Menelaus and gave a comic significance, without descending to the level of indecency, to the part. Mr. Schütz made an excellent representative of the gay son of Priam, and Miss Heynold was a very fascinating Orestes. The other characters do not call for special comment.”
