“’La Périchole’ was produced at the Lyceum Theatre last evening, and was listened to with delight by a large audience. Mlle. Aimée’s performance of the eccentric street singer of Lima is generally considered her best effort, on account of the scope it offers for the exhibition of her versatile talent. She never appeared to better advantage than in this character last night. The opening duet with Picquillo (sustained by M. Kolletz with admirable humor) concerning the conqueror and the Indian maid, the pretty letter song, the after-dinner song and the laughable ‘Aux Mari Recalcitrant’ of the second act were all redemanded.”
“’La Perichole,’ with Aimée in the title rôle, filled the little Fourteenth street theatre to overflowing last night, and the warm and hearty applause that rewarded the efforts of the artists to please was sufficient guarantee of their complete success. Aimée was in admirable spirit and voice, and seemed to throw herself into the excitement and fun of Offenbach’s jolly bouffe with as keen a relish as though she were actually passing through the adventures presented on the stage. Like the taper which burns with unnatural brightness before it goes out and leaves us in utter darkness, so the vivacity and brightness of Aimée and her troupe seem to flare up on the eve of their departure from among us. Last night’s performance closed the regular season.”
