“The beautiful garden over which Mr. Gilmore presides was crowded to its fullest extent last night, the musical attractions being very numerous. The concert began with Weber’s ‘Jubel’ overture, and then came a very effective arrangement for military band of ‘Ocean, Thou mighty monster,’ from the same composer’s masterwork, ‘Oberon,’ succeeded by the second and the best of the torchlight dances of Meyerbeer. In those works the remarkable power and training of the band, which can only be compared to Thomas’ wonderful orchestra as a representative of military organization, were shown to the fullest advantage. Levy played his own ‘Leviathan Polka,’ which gave him full scope for the display of his extraordinary technical powers on the cornet, and Sohst sang in his best baritone style an aria from ‘Nabucco.’ Lefebre gave as a solo for the saxophone a fantasia on ‘Der Freischütz,’ and Arbuckle played a De Beriot air. One of the best programmes of the season will be presented this evening.”
