“The entertainment at the Hippodrome continues to be generously patronized. The plants and flowers are renewed with sufficient frequency; the cataract plays with due regularity; the lights are bright; the paths are kept in good order; the utmost decorum prevails; and there is a general air of content and genteel hilarity throughout the place. Here one may be pretty sure of finding, every pleasant night, a good many of the political and other celebrities who give zest to the month of August in the metropolis, as well as a large representation of other citizens and a multitude of strangers from the hotels. The great building has become one of the favorite lounging places of the city. Mr. Levy’s cornet amuses the audience every night without taxing their intellects too severely, and Mr. Gilmore’s band discourses a variety of music which forms a pleasant accompaniment to the promenade and conversation.”
