“‘Jolly’ Nash made his American debut at the Theatre Comique on Oct. 19. He is middle-aged, has a portly figure, a pleasing countenance, and easy, graceful manners. Attired in full evening dress, he sang a couple of laughing songs, which immediately gained the favor of the audience. Subsequently he performed a solo on the cornet, giving imitations of various bugle calls and their echoes, of a hautboy and of Scotch bagpipes, all of which were excellent, and elicited liberal applause…William Carter sang fresh songs with banjo accompaniment, and introduced new witticisms. Alice Bennett and Jennie Engle sang songs. Diamond and Ryan gave character songs and dances…An excellent business was done.”
