“Miss Sophia Flora Heilbron will give her postponed matinée of piano-fort music at Steinway Hall today.”
“Miss Heilbron, the young pianist, gave the first of her new series of piano-forte recitals yesterday afternoon at Steinway’s. Fate has been unpropitious to her. This concert was to have been given two weeks ago, but at the appointed time one of the worst storms of the season was raging, and the entertainment was postponed. Yesterday the weather was again bad enough to interfere with the attendance. Still there was a fair audience in the smaller hall, and Miss Heilbron’s playing was received with a great deal of favor. The principal piece on the programme was Beethoven’s Kreutzer Sonata, given by Miss Heilbron and Mr. Brandt.”
“A few devoted admirers of music braved the terrors of the weather yesterday afternoon and gathered together in Steinway Hall to listen to a highly interesting concert given by the talented young pianist, Miss Heilbron, with the assistance of other artists. The two selections in the first part of the programme were sufficiently trying for any pianist, especially the ‘Kreutzer Sonata,’ which was very neatly and smoothly performed, the fair pianist having the valuable co-operation of an excellent violinst, Mr. Hermann Brandt. The beautiful subject which begins the second movement lost none of its melodic charm in the performance. A very brilliant and effective transcription on a well known waltz, by Mr. Alfred H. Pease, for two pianos, was played by the gentleman and Miss Heilbron with such élan and spirit that a redemand was the consequence. It is one of the most showy of Mr. Pease’s works, and the construction shows the skill of the accomplished artist. Miss Maggie P. Parker, soprano, and Mr. Sweet, baritone, contributed some vocal selections. The lady has a light, clear, agreeable voice, and that of the gentleman is resonant, sympathetic and capable of being a power on the stage.”
