“This distinguished amateur pianist, who is long and favorably known here as a teacher of much popularity and eminence, gave a concert at the lower hall of Messrs. Steinway last night, in which he was assisted by [see above]. The programme was a very choice one, consisting of [see above]. The Rubinstein quartet and the Schumann work were the most notable selections on the bill.”
“The concert given by Mr. F. Von Breuning on Monday evening in Steinway’s small hall was attended by an excellent audience of connoisseurs and professional musicians, and may be called in every respect a gratifying success. The programme was pleasantly diversified with vocal and instrumental solos, quartets, &c., and enabled us to enjoy some excellent chamber music under favorable auspices. The first piece was a piano and string quatuor of Rubinstein’s, played by Messrs. Von Breuning, Brandt, Schwartz, and Bergner. It is an admirable work, full of melody and force, and comparatively clear in form. A quartet of Haydn’s (the Austrian Hymn and variations), played by Messrs. Brandt, Schwartz, Matzka, and Bergner, was executed to a charm, the tones of the four instruments blending with a smoothness and nice balance which we rarely hear equaled. Four Fantaisie pieces of Schumann's, for piano, violin, and violoncello were afterward given with pleasant effect. The most remarkable of the solo pieces were Mr. Bergner’s beautiful performance of an Adagio for the violoncello by Bargiel (Op. 38), the same which he played at a recent Philharmonic Concert, and Mr. Brandt’s brilliant delivery of a characteristic Rhapsodie Hongroise for the violin, by the distinguished composer and virtuoso, Miska Hauser, whose visit to this country nearly a quarter of a century ago will be remembered by many amateurs.”
