“Private Philharmonic rehearsal, for the Saturday evening concert, at 2 ½. Piano concerto in E-flat (Beethoven of course) by Miss Marie Krebs—one of the few concertos that are worth hearing. Aria from Fidelio, Mme. Lichtmay of the Stadt-Theater. Egmont music—new to me, except the overture, and that I had not heard for years. What an overture it is! Fully worthy to ranked with the Freyschütz & Zauberflöte & perhaps grander than either. Clärchen’s two little songs [from Egmont], 'Die Trommel gerühret' & 'Freudvoll und Leidvoll' are most exquisitely beautiful. The entr’acte, etc., manifestly fine, but needing to be heard again. Was presented to Miss Krebs & sat with her in parquette, except while the young lady was at the piano. She’s rather good-looking, simple & pleasant in manner, & delightfully fresh & frank & enthusiastic in talk about music—clearly worth cultivating.”
