“At private Philharmonic rehearsal this afternoon, they did a symphony by one Albert, a novus homeo—the score of Raff, ‘Im Walde,’ not having arrived. It was poor, vapid & thin—then Vieuxtemps did his violin concerto. Then a directors’ meeting, & then Mr. Vieuxtemps informed us that he should probably be unable to keep his engagement because M. Strakosch had altered his plans. Great wrath, but I told them there was no help for it—a bill for specific performance wouldn’t lie. Then they discussed the symphony—condensed it—& agreed to substitute Mendelssohn’s A minor, a happy change.”
