“[List of evening guests at the Strong residence:]: Also Mr. and Mrs. W. O. Brown (vide May 18/70), who have returned to New York from the West. She wants to sing for the Philharmonic & I have secured her a trial, but am not sanguine of the result. Some of our directors talk of dispensing hereafter with all vocal music, & I strongly incline to that way of thinking. I hope dear little sunshiny affectionate Lucy [Derby] enjoyed the evening. All our friends are enthusiastic about her.”

“With Ellie at private Philharmonic rehearsal this afternoon. Two hours spent over Raff’s beautiful & difficult “Im Walde” Symphony, so Mrs. Brown who was in attendance, could not have a hearing. This symphony takes one by surprise. I can see indications in it of great beauty, to be more fully appreciated when I hear it again. It is full of melodic feeling, & some of its phrases are fresh & pungent. The 4th movement seems the finest orchestral work of recent date that I am aware of.”
