“Private Philharmonic rehearsal 2 ½ p.m. at Academy of Music. Programme second rate. Schumann symphony not wholly vile however: more spontaneous & more suggestive than any orchestral production of his I ever heard. Violin concerto, Sarasate, composer unknown [Bruch]. Poor stuff, well played. Then ‘Heinefetter’s’ overture to Macbeth was labored at for an hour at least. It is very difficult, but not quite as difficult as it should be. (‘Would to heaven it were impossible!’ Dr. Sam. J.) It’s a composition of the Horrible & Awful School—all chords & discords & sensation. Herr Heinefetter must have sought inspiration from Tisiphone, Alecto, & Megaera [three Furies in Greek mythology], mistaking them for three of the nine muses. To the question, ‘Ouverture, que veux tu?’ he responds with the Fat Boy in Pickwick, ‘I wants to make your flesh creep.’ And he does not do it.”
