“Private Philharmonic rehearsal this afternoon with Johny & Temple. Liszt’s overture to ‘Mazeppa’—very difficult, unfortunately not quite impossible—a most elaborate piece of orchestration—glaring with trombone—& vulgar, flaunting, & brazen as a Greene St. hetera. Andante from the Beethoven trio (op. 97) instrumented by Liszt—very good. These crabbed compositions had to be worked at over & over again. Bergmann rapped for a pause & repeat at least once in every six bars. So there was time for only two movements of the Schubert symphony in C. They promise well. Then a long directors’ meeting.”
