“Private Philharmonic rehearsal at Steinway. A Mme. Veretti or Veratti (who seemed quite nice) sang ‘Leise, leise, fromme Weise,’ on trial—& was found wanting. Then Schumann’s symphony in C major, no. 2, & a long orchestral ‘Hirtengesang’ from Liszt’s (how does he spell his insignificant name?) oratorio of Christus. Neither composition impressed me deeply. Thereafter I ‘bossed’ a general meeting of the society, & another of the directors.”
