“Laid up with sick headache till 2 p.m. when I went to the Academy, for a private Philharmonic rehearsal. Took little by my motion. Went hoping for Haydn’s ‘Oxford Symphony,’ but the whole of the two hours was given up to Liszt’s cacophonic preposterous ‘Dante.’ Willed myself in a dentist’s chair by way of change, but in vain. I had to sit & suffer, for there was a meeting of the society to be presided over, & a meeting of the directors afterwards. Such a succession of harsh & doleful noises I never heard.”
