“This afternoon Edmund Schermerhorn’s second orchestral concert, fully attended by nice people. 21st [Street] was represented by Ellie & me, Lucy [Derby], Johny, Temple, & the Abyssinian Captain Atkinson, who was astonished by this sign of civilization in the New World. Talked to Mrs. Colford Jones, beautiful Mrs. General Gerard, etc. Programme: Overture to Egmont. (2) Adagio, for ‘cello & orchestra (Bargiel) most exquisitely played by dear old Bergner. Much applause. (3) Quartette in G major, Mozart. Admirable. (4) ‘Reverie,’ orchestra, Vieuxtemps—null. (5) Concerto, violin, no. 1 in D, Benno Walther, brilliant & conventional, suggesting an infinity of concert pieces heard during an eternity. (6) Andante from a quartette by Schubert, exceedingly lovely. (7) Orchestral fantasie, William Tell, showy & uninteresting.”
