“Thence to private Philharmonic rehearsal at the Academy of Music. Score of Raff symphony missing, so we had only Mozart’s genial healthy, stately, joyous, pure, matchless C major symphony (‘Jupiter’)—perhaps the most perfect orchestral work there is. Of course Beethoven goes far beyond it in many works, but this exceeds him in perfect purity of art. It is perfect music.

Society Meeting & directors’ meeting thereafter. Complimentary resolutions to kind old Bristow, who insisted on our all going with him to a lager bier saloon on 4th Ave. to drink lager & eat sausage. I fear this did not improve my tyrannous dyspepsia.”
