“Yesterday afternoon there was a remarkably good attendance at the full rehearsal of the New York Philharmonic Society at the Academy of Music, the principal attraction probably being the first hearing of the new Violin Concerto by Dr. Leopold Damrosch. It was remarkably well received by the audience, who applauded each of the three movements and warmly welcomed Dr. Damrosch on his appearance. Mendelssohn’s Scotch Symphony and the ‘Lenore’ overture were greatly admired. Wagner’s overture, ‘The Flying Dutchman,’ was well played, although, as usual, the important part for the harp was omitted.
There will be no vocalist at the concert. The instrumental music having been most carefully rehearsed, a particularly good performance to-night is anticipated.”
“The Academy of Music was crowded from parquet to dome yesterday afternoon, on occasion of the last rehearsal of the fifth concert of the New York Philharmonic Society. It was really the best house of the season, which, generally speaking, has been a disastrous one for the society. Such a large attendance is a good augury for tonight’s concert, and may lift the members out of the slough of financial despond in which they have been plunged during this unfortunate season. The concert programme this evening consists of the following [see above].”
