“The concert of last night at the Grand Opera House was a superb affair, though the selection of the ‘Stabat Mater’ evidently did not appeal to the taste of the audience. This noble work of Rossini’s, however, received admirable treatment. The choruses were well sung by about a hundred German ladies and gentlemen, while a quartet of soloists, including Miss Simon, Miss Henne, Mr. Fritsch and Mr. Sohst, gave due expression to the solo passages. The difficult, unaccompanied Quanto corpus morietur was sung by these four vocalists with exquisite taste and with perfect intonation, the fine voices of the tenor and the baritone telling with noble effect in the passage Paradisi Gloria. The ‘Stabat Mater’ was preceded by a miscellaneous concert, in which Wieniawski and Arbuckle were the stars. Many rude people left the theatre during the singing of Rossini’s music, thus showing their incapacity to appreciate the truly beautiful in art.”
