Review: New-Yorker Staats-Zeitung und Herold, 21 September 1863, 4.

“With his ‘Sacred’ concerts, Mr. Falk seems to succeed; last evening the Broadway Garden was overflowing.  Under the direction of Carl Bergmann, the orchestra performed twelve pieces, among which were several opera pieces and also some modern ones, which, with Bergmann, the most capable and brilliant pioneer of newer music in America, cannot fail.  In particular, Rossini’s William Tell overture was played and delicately nuanced.  In place of the trombone solo which was promised, a violin solo was inserted.  With this switch, the public lost hardly anything, because the piece was performed by Mr. Bernstein with artistic understanding and elegance.”
