" . . . . Friday, La Traviata had its own mischance . . .: Mme Ortolani-Brignoli and Mazzoleni were excellent; unfortunately, Bellini found himself to be without voice."

The charm of the music and the contrast with [yesterday’s] dramatic opera should make it appealing to the public.

“Last evening, spite of the bad weather, a fashionable audience assembled at the Academy of Music. The opera given was Verdi’s ‘Traviata,’ which was successfully rendered. We have no space to mention at length the morceaux which attracted the applause of the audience, and will merely add that all the artists were in good voice, and that the mise en scene, choruses and orchestra were as effective as could be desired.”

“Verdi’s opera of ‘La Traviata’ was played here last evening for the first time this season, and, considering the very inclement weather, attracted a good audience.  The caste was in all respects the same as last season, the leading rôles being sustained by Mlle. Ortalani Brignoli, [sic] Signor Mazzoleni and Signor Bellini.  We have rarely heard the lady to greater advantage; the Summer’s repose has evidently benefited her.  Signor Mazzoleni sang and acted with much spirit, but Signor Bellini was, as usual, out of voice.  The orchestra and chorus were excellent.”

“The revival of this score which we hadn’t heard for a long time had a marked success yesterday evening. Mme. Ortolani Brignoli has decidedly found there a role that fits her. She carried it off remarkably from one end to the other and sang outstandingly, especially in the first act. Mazzoleni had a lot of real ardor and Bellini, despite some unevenness of voice, completed the trio very well. In spite of the bad weather, the hall was decked with a relatively large audience which applauded warmly.”

“Ortolani-Brignoli and some of the other artists scarcely equaled expectation.”
