“[T]he Richings have brought their season of emasculated opera to an end.”

Excerpt from a review of Booth’s engagement at Niblo’s the following week.

“Despite Mr. Wheatley’s tact and liberality, it must be said that his invariably crowded houses are not always a source of gratification to the critic. The past four weeks, for instance, have been devoted to a mongrel exhibition of music and provincial vanity that, in a properly constituted city—we mean a city with a sufficient number of theatres—would not and could not be tolerated. From the utter insignificance of the Richings’ performances, therefore, we turn gladly to the promise of Mr. Booth’s.”

“Miss Richings sounded her last note for the present at Niblo’s on Saturday evening, March 26th. To use a flight of fancy, she is to wing her way to the golden shores of the peaceful Pacific, and in sweet cadences warble such dulcet melody as will entrance the very rocks and fill her pockets with ’em.”
