     “Last night the magnificent opera of L’Africaine was performed to a large and highly fashionable audience, proving that although it does not contain the elements of clap-trap popularity, it has those sterling beauties which compel admiration, and offer an attraction which the public cannot resist. The performance was in every respect equal to the fine representations which we have had occasion to notice so frequently during the past few weeks, and was received throughout with warm demonstrations of approbation.”
