“[On both Grafulla and Dodworth…] If leaders would only attend more to expression, than to mere noise—as many of the operatic selections become when played by some of the military bands of this city—they would confer a favor on the composer and their hearers.  Drums and cymbals do not necessarily mean Japanese tomtoms, nor should they destroy the effect of other instruments.  It is quite a mistake to imagine that a piece played by a military band must be a monotone of fuss and noise.  We have heard the drum corps of the French Guides play every variety of expression, and add attractions to the most intricate pieces.  Mr. Grafulla has materials in his band which he can mould at will.  The music for the grand reception is entirely in his hands, and he will, we are sure, spare no pains to make it worthy of that event.”

“The promenade concerts of the Twenty-second and the Seventh regiments, last Saturday night, were as enjoyable as usual, and were largely attended by the members of the regiments and their friends.”
