“‘Pocahontas,’ that very clever and irresistibly laughable burlesque of John Brougham’s, was produced at the Winter Garden, on the 18th inst., to a very crowded house. Mr. Brougham was the Powhattan, James Dunn appeared in his original character of John Smith, and Emilie Melville was engaged expressly to play Pocahantas. Mr. Brougham was, as usual, in capital spirits; with his varied talents, his gentlemanly bearing, his humor, his originality, he is as attractive as ever; there are few actors on the stage so agreeable or genial as Mr. Brougham. As Powhattan he was very laughable, and carried off the honors of the evening. Miss Melville was a rather unsatisfactory Pocahontas. Having seen Mrs. John Wood in this—one of her very best burlesque performances—the impersonation of Miss Melville falls far below mediocrity. She does not look the character, and on the evening in question she was laboring under a regular stage fright, (as on a first appearance), and was quite nervous, which operated very much against her. What singing she had to do was done very cleverly, but as a whole her performance of Pocahontas was not pleasing. Mr. Dunn was excellent as John Smith, giving all the original songs in first rate style.”
