“The excitement over the spectacular drama, as seen at Niblo’s Garden, shows no signs of abatement. The box office is just as eagerly besieged and the aisles are just as crowded as on the first night of the ‘Black Crook.’ Those who want good seats must engage them them [sic] a few days ahead.”

Review: New York Post, 19 September 1866.

“The ‘greatest dramatic spectacle of the age’ has now run for a week at Niblo’s Garden, and with a degree of success unprecedented in the history of such enterprises in this country. By judicious omissions of unimportant passages, and the shortening of other passages, the ‘Black Crook’ is now performed between the hours of half-past seven and five minutes after eleven, a reduction of two hours on the first performance. We have but one fault to find in connection with Niblo’s, and that is, that the aisles should be so filled up with camp chairs. Those who have seats are, for the most part, obliged to remain in them all the evening, while the danger to all in case of an alarm of fire would be very great.”
