Review: New York Post, 30 December 1862, 2.
“The German opera house was crowded last night on the occasion of the production of Auber’s long-promised ‘Mason and Locksmith.” This sprightly and pleasing opera was given with good success; the scolding duet and the working scene between the mason and locksmith received hearty encores. Madame Rotter carried off the honors of the evening, though Madame Johannsen, in a part unsuited to her style, elicited considerable applause. The orchestra played well and the chorus women were chiefly noticeable for their amazing mob caps.”
