“Grand concert of sacred and regular Music for the advancement of Irish nationality.”

“A concert for the benefit of Irish nationality was given at Steinway Hall last evening under the direction of Mr. R. Gonzales [sic]. Madame De Lussan, Miss C. A. Phillips, and a number of other vocalists assisted. Mrs. Gonzales opened the concert with the overture to Maritana on the organ. Considering that the instrument was in an unfurnished state the overture was not a flattering success. The first part of the programme consisted of sacred pieces, such as selections from Nini’s Vespers and the works of Mandanici and Guiglienni. In their midst, however, there was a very irreligious piano solo, namely, Liszt’s Rigoletto. The second part was called secular and comprised some excellent pieces. Madame De Lussan and Mr. Gonzalez were the principal singers. If we judge from the overwhelming enthusiasm of the large audience, the ladies and gentlemen who assisted in the concert were very successful. To judge from a higher standpoint there were still many good points in the music of last night’s concert. The concert will probably be repeated at an early date.”
