“A large audience gathered at the first grand concert of Mr. Henry Tucker last evening. The programme was rather attractive, although comprising little else but English ballad music. Mrs. George Sheppard’s sweet and powerful mezzo soprano voice was heard to advantage in two of the bénéficiare’s compositions, the lady’s rendering of the melodies meriting and receiving an enthusiastic encore. Mr. George Simpson, tenor, sang Balfe’s serenade ‘Good Night, Beloved,’ and Tucker’s ‘He is not Here,’ and Mr. Frank A. Chase rendered Schumann’s ‘Two Grenadiers.’ A fantasia on ‘Martha’ and ‘Variations on the Russian Hymn,’ were admirably executed by the composer, Mr. J. N. Pattison, who was loudly applauded. The remainder of the programme was creditably rendered by Miss Kate M. Willett, a débutante, Miss Eugene Cruger and Messrs. Colby and Tucker. Mr. J. W. Morgan, owing to indisposition, was prevented from appearing.”
