The first of a series of promenade concerts to be given during the winter by Holding’s Thirty-seventh regiment National Guard band took place last evening at the hall of the regiment, on the corner of Thirty-fifth street and Broadway. Over fourteen hundred tickets had been sold, but the rainy aspect of the weather last evening prevented the gathering of more than a moderate attendance. On this occasion the band labored under great disadvantage, for the hall being but sparsely filled, there was so much echo in the sound of the music that the effect was not as good as it should have been, though those that were present evinced the greatest satisfaction in the entertainment, and bestowed on each piece hearty applause. The programme was choice and varied.  Most of the selections were operatic. The grand march in Tannhauser was rendered with fine effect, and the music of the song, ‘Happy be thy Dreams,’ was given with excellent variations in a very happy manner. The overtures to the ‘Barber of Seville’ and ‘Oberon’ were each given, how successfully might have been seen from the encomiums that were bestowed upon them by the grateful audience. The band numbers forty-four pieces. All of the members are musicians of experience and proficiency. They are under the leadership of Signor Conterno. These concerts will be given from this time forth fortnightly, on Saturday evenings, during the season.”
