Review: New York Herald, 28 December 1866, 5.

“If crowded houses and spontaneous tokens of gratification may be taken as evidences of success, then Charley White may congratulate himself on having achieved a complete success.  The exhibition last evening was no exception to this rule, and, despite the rather forbidding appearance of thing out of doors, a large and enthusiastic audience congregated at the Opera House, and the comicalities of Charley White, Hart and Kerns, the feats on the floating wire by Signor Chiriski, and the laughable, magical, comical, trick pantomime entitled The Golden Axe, or the Fairy of the Seas, as well as the gyrations of the ballet troupe, were duly applauded.”
