“Mr. Harrison, the well known director of the Sunday and popular concerts, gave a matinée at Steinway Hall yesterday, which was very well attended.  The three principal artists of the former Bateman troupe appeared in a very attractive programme, in which were selections from De Berriot, Verdi, Gonrod [Gounod], Mills, Bassini, Houmann and Wrighton.  Mr. Mills’ admirable playing, the unequalled rendering of the scena and romanza from Verdi, and Carl Rosa’s artistic interpretation of the violin part of the programme were received with applause.  Mr. Harrison’s idea in selecting a night for Wallace, an operatic night, a Mendelssohn and Mozart night, and an English ballad night for his Monday popular concerts, is another feature in the present musical season.”

“The Parepa Matinée on Saturday attracted a good audience to Steinway Hall. The day was not tempting to pedestrians. Had it been cleaner underfoot, the hall would, we doubt not, have been completely crowded. The programme, although bright and brief, was lengthy, owing to the fact that everything was encored. Mme. Parepa sang a scena from ‘Giovanna D’Arco,’ by Verdi; a beautiful ballad by Wrighton, called ‘They Tell Me I Am Quite Forgot,’ and Gounod’s exquisite barcarolle, ‘Où Voulez Vous Aller.’ The latter, with its many shades of coloring and its sensuous sway of rhythm, was rendered with a charm which we have never heard excelled. Mme. Parepa was in admirable voice, and sang everything in a thoroughly artistic and delightful way. Mr. S. B. Mills received a couple of encores, as also did M. Carl Rosa. Both gentlemen played faultlessly.”
