“Flotow was the attraction last night at two theatres, the Olympic and Thalia. At the latter one of his best, most melodious and sparkling works, ‘Stradella,’ was given. Madame Johannsen appeared as Leonore, Himmer as Stradella, Groodel [sic] and W. Formes as the robbers, and Ulrichs as Bassi. There is not an artist on the operatic stage whose voice has held its own prima donna standard longer than Madame Johannsen’s. Last night she sang splendidly, displaying the thorough artist in bringing out the strong, brilliant points of her voice and avoiding the weak ones. Franz Himmer made a very good Stradella, and the robbers were excellent—that is in voice and acting—not in character. The houses at this theatre are growing beautifully less each night through the neglect of our German population. This neglect is the more unjust as the management produces the best operas of the German school, and although there are many defects and few of the artists are remarkably brilliant, still there is enough to encourage them to still greater efforts. As it is now, it is struggling against fate.”
