Important mid-19th century musician, first as a member and manager of the famous "Germania Musical Society," manager of Louis Moreau Gottschalk, and during the Civil War, as conductor of New York's 22nd Regiment Band. He also led his own highly regarded society orchestra in New York and Newport, RI, and along the way, also worked for P. T. Barnum. Helmsmüller was a pianist and fairly prolific composer of dance music and light classical works. Born in Germany, died in New York City.
