"Although the parting serenade which the members of Mr. Thomas’ Orchestra gave him the evening before his departure for Europe may not have reached the proportions of a regular concert, yet the selections that were performed on the occasion certainly entitle it to exaltation to that dignity. Schubert’s ‘Serenade,’ selections from Wagner’s ‘Lohengrin,’ and the ‘Bird and Peasant’ [sic] overture, were given as creditably as ever they were before a critical audience. Mr. Matzka, who conducted the complimentary affair, is to preside during Mr. Thomas’ absence, over the now familiar ‘Grand Orchestra,’ and last evening made his debut in that position at Mr. Harrison's thirty-fourth Sunday concert."
