“The delightful plot, the sparkling sentiment, the fairy creations and transformations, the new characters and drollery of Bully Bottom and the Hard-handed Men of Athens, the cross purposes of fairies and mortals, and the gorgeous and truly beautiful scenery and tableaux of the ‘Midsummer Night’s Dream,’ as mounted at this establishment, still hold it as one of the living sensations of the town. The panorama of the voyage of Oberon combines in itself all the elements of a charming poem passing before us in the constantly changing beauties of the earth and sky, land and sea, light and shade; and the closing and crowning tableaux and illumination are unquestionably one of the most brilliant, graceful, tasteful and exquisitely beautiful combinations of pretty things ever produced on any stage during the present generation. As a work of genius and art, to the lover of such things, this crowning scene alone is worth a trip from Athens in Ohio, or Athens in Georgia—if not from Athens of Alcibiades and Bully Bottom.”
