Review: New York Herald, 11 March 1868.

“Mlle. Fleury Longchamps personated the Grand duchess last evening so acceptably as to be encored several times. The distribution of the other rôles in this exquisite satire on court life was the same as heretofore, and all the rôles, from the highest to the least important, were, as usual, admirably sustained. Mr. Bateman is fortunate not only in having a plentiful supply of Grand Duchesses, but an unrivalled company, who could not fail of being applauded even if he were to take in into his head to give ‘Hamlet with the part of Hamlet omitted.’ What with Generals Boum and Fritz, Prince Paul and the Barons Grog and Puck, Nepomus, Wanda, the Dumes d’Honneur, the rest of the court and the army, the sparkling music of Offenbach would make this sprightly opera bouffe pass off well, even if the part of ‘Grand Duchess’ were for once to be omitted.”

“‘La Grande Duchesse’ will, of course, be played at the matinée. The title rôle is now played, and very charmingly, by Mlle. Fleury. The vivacious and eccentric Tostee has been quite seriously indisposed. Ever since her arrival in this country she has suffered more or less from a throad trouble, and her several indispositions have always been traced to this prolific source of discomfort. Yielding at length to the advice of her physician, she has recently had the tonsils removed. From this operation she is so rapidly recovering that only yesterday she was able to attend the regular rehearsal of ‘La Bell Helene.’ What is better still, it is not likely to have any bad effect on her voice. On the contrary it will relieve her from a sensitive source of trouble and remove the anxiety of the public on the subject of her regular appearance.”
