“Mr. Ole Bull had the entire musical field to himself last evening, and the result was a very good house. The great Norwegian’s star is evidently in the ascendancy. His style pleases the public, and indeed it is so replete with the indications of genius that it could hardly fail to do so. Everything was, of course, encored. This appears to be an understanding between the player and the audience. Paganini's ‘Adagio Expressivo’ was superbly played, with a grandeur and breadth to which the public is wholly unaccustomed; the ‘Rondo’ which follows was taken somewhat slowly, but it was also well played. The encore piece was a series of variations on ‘Love [sic] told a flattering tale.’ The Russian air called the ‘Nightingale’ was the second piece. It brought out all the best qualities of Ole Bull's playing, and was in every respect delightful. This, too, was encored, and ‘Home, Sweet Home,’ substituted. In the second part Ole Bull played his famous ‘Polacca guerriera,’ producing an electrical effect on the audience. Signors Severini and Randolpfi [sic] assisted, with considerable ability, in the vocal department, and Mr. George W. Morgan was of course unexceptionally proficient at the organ. Mr. Ed. Hoffmann was the conductor.”
