"It is one of the few German operas in which recitative, in the Italian style, takes the place of dialogue. It contains many pleasing airs, shows good orchestral treatment, and in the last two acts there are choruses admirable as compositions, and splendidly sung by Mr. Anschutz’s choristers. There is, moreover, a long violin solo, which, as played by Noll, deserves the hearty applause it always receives."
